Order of Operations          Lesson 1.1

When you do a multi-step problem you have to follow a certain order. To follow this order use the please excuse my dear aunt sally or

P       E           M        D       A          S
( )   exponents    x         /        +          -

When you do a multi-step problem it is important that you follow the order, if not you will get the wrong answer.
34-(20+2)x3
____________

When you have letters that are next to each other go from left to right.
Ex: 2/16x6

In this case you have M and D which are division and multiplication and even though multiplication is first, you have to do division.

A    (12-3)x2+35

B     24x2+33(5-3)

Drawing models

Lisa has twice as many roses as carnations. She has 12 roses in her garden.
1.    Draw your model

Cuadro de texto: Cuadro de texto: R                          =12
C

2.
Divide the number of boxes by the total.
         4/12=4     (/=division sing)
3.    Put your answer in all the boxes
Cuadro de texto: 4 Cuadro de texto: 4 Cuadro de texto: 4R                          =12
C
4
.
To answer questions they give you, you look at your model, do the work and you’ll get it. Let’s do the following 3 together.
·       How many roses are there?
In this one you have to multiply the 4 two times because there are two boxes with the four in it so your answer should be 8.
·       How many more roses than carnations?
In this case, you’ll need to subtract the number of roses you have from the number of carnations, and you get 4.
·       How many carnations?

On this one, you have to multiply 4 times one. So your answer should be 4.
Poems
Stanzas- groups of words in a poem
Figurative language- a phrase that says something but doesn’t really show its real meaning.
Ex: The sun was beating me down. = The sun was so hot, I was getting tired
In this sentence the sun doesn’t actually beat you down.
Poems don’t always have to rhyme
Rhyme pattern is the pattern of rhymes
Ex: Bored at home. A
With nothing to say. B
I hear the same stories every day. B
Lost in time, ‘cause I’m sleeping. C
And also when I’m reading. C

Each two lines that rhyme get the same letter.

Themes of a Poem

Poems have many themes, it is impressive that in one poem you can find tons of stuff like themes, lessons and stories. The hints to find a theme of a poem is

A short poem would have about three stanzas, on the Microsoft word office you can make your own charts to help you figure out themes and practice.
