Order of Operations          Lesson 1.1

When you do a multi-step problem you have to follow a certain order. To follow this order use the please excuse my dear aunt sally or

P       E           M        D       A          S
( )   exponents    x         /        +          -

When you do a multi-step problem it is important that you follow the order, if not you will get the wrong answer.
34-(20+2)x3
____________

When you have letters that are next to each other go from left to right.
Ex: 2/16x6

In this case you have M and D which are division and multiplication and even though multiplication is first, you have to do division.

A    (12-3)x2+35

B     24x2+33(5-3)

Drawing models

Lisa has twice as many roses as carnations. She has 12 roses in her garden.
1.    Draw your model

Cuadro de texto: Cuadro de texto: R                          =12
C

2.
Divide the number of boxes by the total.
         4/12=4     (/=division sing)
3.    Put your answer in all the boxes
Cuadro de texto: 4 Cuadro de texto: 4 Cuadro de texto: 4R                          =12
C
4
.
To answer questions they give you, you look at your model, do the work and you’ll get it. Let’s do the following 3 together.
·       How many roses are there?
In this one you have to multiply the 4 two times because there are two boxes with the four in it so your answer should be 8.
·       How many more roses than carnations?
In this case, you’ll need to subtract the number of roses you have from the number of carnations, and you get 4.
·       How many carnations?

On this one, you have to multiply 4 times one. So your answer should be 4.
Poems
Stanzas- groups of words in a poem
Figurative language- a phrase that says something but doesn’t really show its real meaning.
Ex: The sun was beating me down. = The sun was so hot, I was getting tired
In this sentence the sun doesn’t actually beat you down.
Poems don’t always have to rhyme
Rhyme pattern is the pattern of rhymes
Ex: Bored at home. A
With nothing to say. B
I hear the same stories every day. B
Lost in time, ‘cause I’m sleeping. C
And also when I’m reading. C

Each two lines that rhyme get the same letter.

Themes of a Poem

Poems have many themes, it is impressive that in one poem you can find tons of stuff like themes, lessons and stories. The hints to find a theme of a poem is
·         Clue words
·         Special features
A short poem would have about three stanzas, on the Microsoft word office you can make your own charts to help you figure out themes and practice.

Makinig Inferences

An inference is a prediction. Sometimes when you're reading a chapter book, you stop reading at a chapter and you want to know what happens next. Inferences help you with this. Based on what you already know about the text/story, you can try to figure out what will happen. Also, when you're reading a story that ends suddendly, not telling you what's ging to happen next, you could inferences too. Inferences are very important. To make an inference use

  • Hints in the text
  • What you already know
  • What the story is about

Fractions & Mixed numbers

Fractions & Mixed Numbers
Fractions- A fraction tells how many pieces in total, and how many pieces were used. The number that represents how many pieces were used is called the numerator. The numerator is at the top (or left) of the fraction. The denominator is the number that represents how many pieces are in the whole fraction. The denominator is at the bottom (or right) of the fraction.
Ex- 1/3
In this case, 1 is the numerator and 3 is the denominator

Fractions can also be represented by using pictures. The denominator tells you how many pieces to break the picture in and the numerator tells you how many you have to shade in.

Ex- 1/3

Mixed numbers- Mixed numbers are used to represent how many wholes (consider- whole pies) and the joining fraction, which is not completed. When you have a whole number and a fraction, you always say the whole number first and then you say the fraction.
Ex- 12/4= One and two fourths
See the picture below to look at how whole numbers are drawn.

To write whole numbers as a fraction multiply the denominator times the fraction and add your answer with the numerator. By doing that, you will have the numerator done. To get the denominator just keep the bottom number the same.
WARNING- You can ONLY draw an improper fraction if it is turned into a mixed number.
To turn an improper fraction, divide the denominator times the numerator. If you have left, put it as the numerator of the fraction, and again, the denominator stays the same.

How to write an Opinion Essay

Hello! And welcome to the class. Today you will be learning about opinion essays. You will have examples and facts teaching what to include in your opinion essay. I will also be posting an opinion essay at the end of the lesson for to you how it looks like! Ready to start?

How to write an opinion essay
1. To write an opinion essay you have to go with one side of your topic.
2. Choose at least 2 or 3 reasons explaining your opinion.
Introduction
·      Remember to always make the introduction short and sweet.
·      State what you will be writing about.
·      Don not include one of the reasons why you are on that side of the topic.

Paragraphs #1 and #2
·       State why you are on that side of the topic
·       Use examples and details from the text
·       Remember to be specific
·       Write the end of the paragraph using a one sentence conclusion

Conclusion
·       Restate the topic and opinion

·       Write down the three reasons from the text (do not use details or direct quotation marks, just remind  the reader)
·       Remember to be short and sweet, and also be organized

WRITING AN OPINION ESSAY
An opinion essay needs certain things, like the introduction, 1,2,3 paragraphs, and at the end what you need is a conclusion. Only to refresh your mind we posted some examples.
Introduction- there has been a debate about whether should parents help kids with homework. In my opinion parents should help kids with their homework.
Conclusion- Now you can see why helping kids with homework is such an important thing. Parents please remember that kids will be more than happy to show the teacher their perfect homework assignments!
An opinion essay also contains your opinion about something; it is supported with facts, details, and examples to help the readers understand.
The following topics will be about how you feel about thanksgiving, what you’re thankful for, and why you’re thankful for that. The next essay will be about how you feel about Christmas, supported with details from your answered questions.

NOW START WITH YOUR SLOPPY COPY AND DO THE FINAL DRAFT, FOR MORE HELP REMEMBER THAT YOU CAN ALWAYS ASK YOUR TEACHER!

                  OPINION ESSAY
Should parents help kids with homework?

Nowadays kids need a boost. Sometimes kids can be stressed over homework  because of the fact that they didn't quite get the lesson of the day after many explanations etc. To begin with, school has become more stressful and demanding with homework, activities, projects etc.
“Eleven year old Emily had been stressed for days about her school project: A power point presentation on the life of J.K Rowling. Busy with swim-team practice and religious school, she barely had time to work on it. So she was grateful when the night before it was due, her father swooped in to save her.”

Moreover, kids are also stressed with after school activities and have barely enough time to eat. Kids are also really stressed with homework because of the fact that they needed to leave school early and didn’t have the lesson of the day inside their minds. Just like when some friends of mine are really stressed with the homework because they sometimes leave the school early and just don’t know what to do. Imagine you’re stuck on a graded homework assignment but you were missing school the day that the teachers are going to teach you the last questions but you were missing. And I know there’s a solution to that problem but, what will happen if it was Friday and you need to turn it on Monday OMG! That’s when you need most of the help from your parents.

In addition, if kids don’t receive help from their parents, they could get bad grades, still don’t know the lesson, and come to school with a blank paper.
Last but not least “studies show that many kids are stressed over school and feel more pressure than ever to do well.” And again if you don’t help them review , study or do homework how are they going to learn? So parents please don’t tell them the answers, since you are not the ones that are going to school, just help them out. Like moms and dads can point out mistakes, help with projects, and they can also help you out by finding some information you can use. And soon you’ll see that your child/children will have magnificent grades.
So should parents help with homework? I believe yes. Because it is more important than ever to help our children to succeed. So think about your decision and figure out what side you’re with. The child being stressed because of the fact that nobody helps him/her with homework or the fact that your children/child  is happily learning from their parents and finally understand homework. So if you are a parent thank you for understanding!

For more information, details and opinions read should parents help with homework? On the story works website or book which can be purchased or found in schools.

Heat and Energy in Science

Good afternoon everybody! today you will be learning about heat and energy and particles and conduction etc. If you need help, you can also visit  Study Jams where you can check out a video, also remember to comment!
(there will not be a test!)
Science study notes for science test pg.1

·       Thermal energy- energy due to moving particles that make up matter.
·       Energy- the ability to change something or do work
·        Energy fact #2- All changes need energy
·       Particles- particles in a solid are very close together, particles in a liquid are close together but can move past each other. The particles on a gas are far apart and move in many directions
·        Particles #2 - Moving particles make thermal energy
·       Thermometer- a tool used to measure temperature
·       Heat- total energy of moving particles in matter
·       Temperature fact #2-  measures the average energy of the matter
·       Thermal energy fact #2- measures the total energy of the moving particles

Science study notes for science test pg.2
·       Conduction- the transfer of heat energy by one thing touching another
·       Conductor- a material that readily (easily) allows heat to move
·       Insulator- a material that limits the amount of heat that passes through it
·       Convection current- a pattern of flowing heat energy; formed when heated fluid expands
·       Radiation- energy that is sent out without particles

Facts and helping stuff
·       All changes need energy
·       All matter is made of tiny moving particles
·       Particles move faster as the object becomes hotter
·       Particles move slower as the object becomes cooler
·       Moving particles make thermal energy
·       Thermometer is a tool used to measure temperature
·       Liquid particles move closer together when the matter’s particles slow down, this causes liquid to move down the tube
·       Difference between heat and temperature are the movement of the particles of matter
·       Heat is the transfer of thermal energy from one piece of matter to another
·       The greater the amount of particles matter has, the more inertial energy it contains
·       Thermal energy moves from warmer areas to cooler ones

·       In convection a fluid moves from place to place
