Poems
Stanzas- groups of words in a poem
Figurative language- a phrase that says something but doesn’t really show its real meaning.
Ex: The sun was beating me down. = The sun was so hot, I was getting tired
In this sentence the sun doesn’t actually beat you down.
Poems don’t always have to rhyme
Rhyme pattern is the pattern of rhymes
Ex: Bored at home. A
With nothing to say. B
I hear the same stories every day. B
Lost in time, ‘cause I’m sleeping. C
And also when I’m reading. C


Each two lines that rhyme get the same letter.

Themes of a Poem


Poems have many themes, it is impressive that in one poem you can find tons of stuff like themes, lessons and stories. The hints to find a theme of a poem is
·         Clue words
·         Special features
A short poem would have about three stanzas, on the Microsoft word office you can make your own charts to help you figure out themes and practice.

Makinig Inferences

An inference is a prediction. Sometimes when you're reading a chapter book, you stop reading at a chapter and you want to know what happens next. Inferences help you with this. Based on what you already know about the text/story, you can try to figure out what will happen. Also, when you're reading a story that ends suddendly, not telling you what's ging to happen next, you could inferences too. Inferences are very important. To make an inference use

  • Hints in the text
  • What you already know
  • What the story is about

Fractions & Mixed numbers

Fractions & Mixed Numbers
Fractions- A fraction tells how many pieces in total, and how many pieces were used. The number that represents how many pieces were used is called the numerator. The numerator is at the top (or left) of the fraction. The denominator is the number that represents how many pieces are in the whole fraction. The denominator is at the bottom (or right) of the fraction.
Ex- 1/3
In this case, 1 is the numerator and 3 is the denominator

Fractions can also be represented by using pictures. The denominator tells you how many pieces to break the picture in and the numerator tells you how many you have to shade in.



Ex- 1/3




Mixed numbers- Mixed numbers are used to represent how many wholes (consider- whole pies) and the joining fraction, which is not completed. When you have a whole number and a fraction, you always say the whole number first and then you say the fraction.
Ex- 12/4= One and two fourths
See the picture below to look at how whole numbers are drawn.









To write whole numbers as a fraction multiply the denominator times the fraction and add your answer with the numerator. By doing that, you will have the numerator done. To get the denominator just keep the bottom number the same.
WARNING- You can ONLY draw an improper fraction if it is turned into a mixed number.
To turn an improper fraction, divide the denominator times the numerator. If you have left, put it as the numerator of the fraction, and again, the denominator stays the same.
